Meet Huu Kim Lam Le, President of the UOW Sportaholic Club
Can you tell us about your role as a Student Casual and President of the Sportaholic Club at UOW Sydney CBD?
As a Student Casual, I assist in planning and delivering student events alongside staff members. My responsibilities include setting up event spaces, preparing equipment and refreshments, and interacting with students and attendees to ensure they have a positive experience.
As President of the , I oversee the club’s overall operations. This includes organising venues, creating opportunities for students to connect through sports, managing funding and event applications, and gathering feedback from members to continuously improve our activities.
What does a typical event look like for you?
A typical event involves preparing the venue, setting up equipment and resources, welcoming and interacting with students, and ensuring everything runs smoothly. After the event, I often collect feedback from participants and share it with the staff team so we can continue improving future events.
What kinds of responsibilities or challenges do you usually handle during events and club activities?
One challenge during events is ensuring that all students feel included. Students come from different trimesters and backgrounds, so I make an extra effort to engage everyone and create an inclusive environment. This often requires empathy, patience, and understanding.
For the club, one of the biggest challenges is encouraging participation. Many students have work, study, and personal commitments, making it difficult for them to attend activities regularly. I spend time speaking with members individually to understand their circumstances and find ways to make participation more accessible and engaging.
What skills have you developed through this job?
Through my role as a Student Casual, I have developed strong communication and interpersonal skills by interacting with a diverse range of students and staff.
As President of the Sportaholic Club, I have strengthened my leadership, coordination, event management, and organisational skills by managing club activities and working with my executive team.
What is your role in leading the Sportaholic Club?
As President, I oversee the club’s operations and ensure that all activities align with our goals. I review and approve forms submitted by the executive team, delegate responsibilities to different executives, and provide guidance to ensure tasks are completed effectively. I also support team collaboration and strategic planning for club events and initiatives.
What inspired you to get involved in both Student Casual work and the Sportaholic Club?
My motivation for starting the was to build a stronger student community, as mentioned earlier.
For the Student Casual role, I have always enjoyed being involved on campus. As someone who spends a lot of time studying and using university facilities, I wanted to contribute more to student life and help create meaningful experiences for other students, which inspired me to apply for the position.
Why would you recommend this experience to other students at UOW?
Absolutely. Both roles have provided me with valuable opportunities to develop leadership, communication, and teamwork skills while meeting people from diverse backgrounds. They have allowed me to contribute positively to the student community and gain practical experience outside the classroom. I would highly recommend these opportunities to students who want to build their confidence, expand their network, and make the most of their university experience.
